When to Use
- Unreal or unlikely situations
- Use the second conditional when the situation is imaginary or improbable: 'If I were the president, I would change this law.'
- Giving advice
- 'If I were you, I would talk to your manager.' This is a very common way to suggest something politely.
- Dreaming and wishing
- Use it to talk about dreams: 'If we lived by the sea, we'd swim every morning.'
Tip
In formal English, use 'were' for all subjects: 'If I were,' 'If she were.' In casual speech, 'If I was' is common, but 'were' is safer in exams and writing.
