If it rains, I will take an umbrella.
Visual Explanation
If + present simple, will + base verb
If+present simple+will + base verb
Examples
If you study tonight, you will pass the exam.
If the weather is good, we'll go to the beach.
I won't finish on time if nobody helps me.
When to Use
- Real, possible situations
- Use the first conditional for things that are likely or possible in the future: 'If I get the job, I'll move to London.'
- Warnings and promises
- 'If you touch that, you'll burn yourself.' 'If you need anything, I will help you.'
- Order of clauses
- You can reverse the clauses: 'I'll call you if I'm late.' No comma when 'if' comes second.
Tip
Never use 'will' in the if-clause. Say 'If it rains, I will stay home' — not 'If it will rain, I will stay home.'
