Past Simple — Regular Verbs
Talking about finished actions: walked, played, visited.
Visual Explanation
Affirmative
Subject+verb + -ed+complement
Examples
I visited my grandparents last weekend.
She finished the report before lunch.
We walked along the river yesterday.
When to Use
- Completed actions
- Use the past simple for actions that started and finished in the past: 'They moved to Berlin in 2019.'
- Spelling rules
- Most verbs add -ed. Verbs ending in -e add only -d (lived). Verbs ending in consonant + y change to -ied (studied). Short verbs ending in a single vowel + consonant double the final letter (stop → stopped, plan → planned).
- Time expressions
- Often used with 'yesterday,' 'last week,' 'two days ago,' 'in 2020.'
Tip
The past simple form is the same for all subjects: I walked, you walked, she walked, they walked. No extra -s for he/she/it.
