Past Simple — Regular Verbs

Talking about finished actions: walked, played, visited.

Visual Explanation

Affirmative

Subject+verb + -ed+complement

Examples

I visited my grandparents last weekend.

She finished the report before lunch.

We walked along the river yesterday.

When to Use

Completed actions
Use the past simple for actions that started and finished in the past: 'They moved to Berlin in 2019.'
Spelling rules
Most verbs add -ed. Verbs ending in -e add only -d (lived). Verbs ending in consonant + y change to -ied (studied). Short verbs ending in a single vowel + consonant double the final letter (stop → stopped, plan → planned).
Time expressions
Often used with 'yesterday,' 'last week,' 'two days ago,' 'in 2020.'

Tip

The past simple form is the same for all subjects: I walked, you walked, she walked, they walked. No extra -s for he/she/it.
