When to Use
- Countable nouns
- Things you can count: one apple, two chairs. Use 'many,' 'a few,' and 'how many.'
- Uncountable nouns
- Things you cannot count individually: water, rice, information. Use 'much,' 'a little,' and 'how much.'
- some / any
- Use 'some' in affirmative sentences and offers. Use 'any' in questions and negatives: 'Is there any bread?'
Tip
Some nouns that are uncountable in English are countable in other languages: advice, information, furniture, luggage, news. Say 'a piece of advice,' not 'an advice.'
