The Alphabet & Spelling
Letters, sounds, and how to spell words aloud.
Visual Explanation
Spelling question
How do you spell+word+?
Examples
How do you spell your name? M-A-R-C-O.
Is that with a C or a K?
B as in Boston, not V as in Victor.
When to Use
- Spelling aloud
- Say each letter one by one: B-O-O-K. Use a pause between letters.
- Clarifying letters
- Use 'as in' to avoid confusion: 'S as in Sam, not F as in Frank.'
- Common confusions
- B/V, G/J, and I/E sound very similar in many languages. Practise these pairs.
Tip
The letters A, E, I, O, U are vowels. The other 21 letters are consonants. This matters when choosing 'a' or 'an' before a word.
