When to Use
- Family words
- 'Mother' and 'father' are formal. In everyday English, people say 'mum' and 'dad.'
- Rooms and furniture
- Living room, bedroom, kitchen, bathroom. A flat has rooms; a house may also have a garden.
- Describing your home
- Use 'There is' for one thing and 'There are' for more than one: 'There are three bedrooms.'
Tip
'House' means the building. 'Home' means where you live — it can be a house, a flat, or anything. In English, 'home' carries a sense of belonging, not just location. Say 'I'm going home' — it sounds more natural than 'I'm going to my house' in most situations.
